Khalifa University Faculty to Join 10 International Judges for Assessing MBZIRC 2020 Challenges

Khalifa University of Science and Technology, organizers of the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC), today announced details on the elite panel of judges who will assess the 30 participating teams at MBZIRC 2020, that is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

MBZIRC 2020 will be co-located with the 4th edition of Unmanned System Exhibition (UMEX) and the Simulation and Training Exhibition and Conference (SimTEX) from 23-25 February at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC). Khalifa University will also be showcasing its research institutes, research centers, academic programs and campus facilities at UMEX 2020.

The MBZIRC 2020 jury panel includes globally-renowned scholars and eminent researchers in robotics and artificial intelligence from some of the top universities and research labs in the world. There will be 10 international judges in addition to 10 judges from among Khalifa University faculty to ensure that the finalists comply with all MBZIRC 2020 evaluation criteria. They will also certify the final scores for each trial of the four MBZIRC Challenges. Dr Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice-President, Khalifa University, is the Steering Committee General Co-Chair for MBZIRC 2020.

Dr. Lakmal Seneviratne, Technical Chair, MBZIRC 2020 Organizing Committee, and Professor, Mechanical Engineering, Director, Center for Autonomous Robotic Systems, and Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, Khalifa University, said: “We are delighted to have a panel of international jurors who are preeminent scholars in robotics and artificial intelligence. Their presence will ensure the integrity of the MBZIRC 2020 team evaluations. The 10 jury members will also give keynote speeches at the MBZIRC Symposium which will take place soon after the competition, on 26th and 27th February.”

International jurors include Dr Paolo Dario, Professor, Biomedical Engineering and Director, BioRobotics Institute, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy; Dr. Ousama Khatib, Professor, Department of Computer Science, Stanford University, US; Dr. Satoshi Tadokoro, Professor of Graduate School of Information Sciences (GSIS), Tohoku University, Japan, and Dr Marcelo Ang, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore, Dr. Rachid Alami, Senior Scientist at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research), Dr. Jianwei Zhang, Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of Hamburg, Dr Ron Arkin, Professor of Computer Science, College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Dr. Rainer Bischoff, Head of Corporate Research, KUKA Roboter, and Dr Tamim Asfour, Professor, Institute for Anthropomatics and Robotics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
